Andson is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Educational Organization and was created in 2009 to provide financial literacy education to children and young adults. Through Andson, OpeNVest was born.
To teach students the skills that are necessary for making critical financial decisions at an early age. Such capabilities directly affect students' future propensity to attain key assets (personal property, reliable savings, and even a higher education) that serve to elevate their economic well-being. The habits and practices that are instilled in youth and young adults about money, credit/debt, expenditures, and savings form the basis of good money practices as they transition into adulthood. Openvest offers a comprehensive strategy for educating youth to be effective managers of money and successful navigators of a complex financial marketplace.
How We STARTED
Personal finance is something that should be learned starting early. However, good resources just aren’t out there. Adult financial education is too dull, and most of the financial institutions wanted something better, but didn’t know where to go. More and more states are requiring personal finance before graduation, but without a well-developed curriculum, educators are often left cobbling together solutions. Most importantly, once a teacher that is passionate about finance leaves a school, the entire personal finance program disappears as well. We needed a better way.
In 2016, we started building video based lessons. These lessons are exciting, vivid, and don’t make children bored out of their mind. Every lesson allows for "facilitators" in the classroom. Those can be teachers, parents, or volunteers from the professional world. We feel that getting content into the hands of adults, with minimum training required, is the best way to serve every student in every classroom.
Every lesson has a take-home sheet for parents, allowing students to more effectively share what they learned in class. Then, a parent and child complete homework together. And, everything that goes home is provided in both English and Spanish. This is our idea of bringing it home to those kitchen table experiences families once shared.
